Spencer Sweet Peas

This class of sweet peas typically have large, frilly flowers and have become the mainstay of the British sweet pea exhibitor. Their name comes from Princess Diana’s family, the Spencers of Althorp House, as it was their head gardener, Silas Cole, who in 1901 first exhibited “Countess Spencer”, a variety that was much larger and frillier than anything else at the time. They are often known as “late Spencers” as they tend to flower 3-4 weeks later than their older relatives the Heirloom or Grandiflora types.
