          SHOWBENCH SWEET PEAS
The name of Unwins is famous the world over for the breeding of Sweet Peas. The company was founded
at Histon in Cambridgeshire, England, in 1903 by William Unwin who was previously a market gardener producing cut flowers for London’s Covent Garden Market. He became particularly interested in Sweet Peas when he discovered a large flowered, frilly form of a variety called Prima Donna in 1901.
Two years later he was hybridising Sweet Peas and selling seed to gardeners. These were the basis of
today’s Spencer Sweet Peas.
The business grew steadily and by 1914 William Unwin was trading as a general seedsman. He had the
good fortune to be joined by his son Charles, who became renowned in the plant world as a breeder of Sweet
Peas. Throughout the twentieth century he hybridised and introduced a large range of varieties.
Today, Unwins still breeds and introduces many new varieties and is the largest commercial breeder of
Sweet Peas in the world. The showbench range represents some of the best introductions from their range.
