ERYNGIUM GIGANTEUM ‘SILVER GHOST’

Botanical Name:- Eryngium giganteum
Family:- Umbelliferae
Common Name:- Sea Holly
Class:- HB

Seed Count:- 170 seeds/ gm; 5,000 seeds/ ounce

Seed required for 1000 plants:- 30 gm

Variety Description
Height: 45-60 cm x 50 cm spread. A new and quite improved variation over the old favourite ‘Miss Wilmott’s Ghost’, having a much broader, rather than columnar habit and much larger bracted glorious lime green flowers in early summer. Later the flowers develop a shining silvery hue, appearing a full month earlier than ‘Miss Wilmott’, which barely manages to ripen in the autumn garden. The well-known English plant hunter, Martin Rix, brought this valuable new discovery back from Turkey. A classic and architectural plant for the back of the border. Can also be used as a dried cut flower, with the steely blue stems and highly ornamental dried seed heads.

Sowing and Germination
Cold germinator. The sowing must be kept warm at about +18 to + 22 deg. C (64-72 deg. F) and moist for the first 2 weeks. After this period the sowing must be kept at a cold temperature between –4 deg. C and + 4 deg. C (between 25-39 deg. F) for another 4-6 weeks.

Growing on
The most effective growing on temperatures are between +5 to +12 deg. C (41-54 deg. F), even if germination has already started. The best location for this sowing, even in March, April & May , is the open field, the cold frame or a cool greenhouse.
