to March under glass at a temperature of 15-20 C (60-68 F).The seeds should
be covered to a depth of 1.2cm (1/2”) Seeds may also be sown directly
in the open ground in April where they are to flower. For earlier flowering
plants the seeds may also be sown in September and October in milder areas
and overwintered in a cold frame or cold glasshouse.
Pricking out and potting on.
Seed sown in seed trays should be pricked out as soon as the seedlings
are large enough to handle. Care should be taken not to damage the root
system. The main shoot of tall varieties can be removed (pinched out) at
the three leaf stage when the plants are about 3-4” tall this will
ecourage branching stems.
Growing on
The plants should be gradually hardened off and tall varieties should
be planted 12” apart in May in the open ground where they are to
flower.Dwarf varieties shoul be planted in patio containers or baskets,
or used in the front of borders.
General culture
Sweet Peas prefer well dug soil with rotted compost dug in to retain moisture.
Taller varieties may be trained up canes or netting.Keep Sweet Peas deadheaded
at all times to maintain continuity of flowering.Plants benefit from monthly
feeding of liquid fertilizer and watering thoroughly in dry spells.
Pest and Diseases
Guard against mice damage at the seedling stage. In some areas Powdery
Mildew can be a problem on mature plants.
Marketing and Uses
Dwarf varieties such as Cupid are excellent for use in tubs and containers
on the patio and for use in hanging baskets.Tall varieties make excellent
cut flowers many being highly scented. Sweet Peas are extremely easy to
grow which makes them very popular for both the Home gardener and Professional
